The Fourth Gospel (or Gospel of John)is both beautiful and frustrating. On the one hand its narratives, seeming to contain historically accurate information, are crafted like a drama for the stage, and its discourses, purporting to be the voice of Jesus, have poetic qualities like the Psalms or the Proverbs. On the other hand the discourses are repetitive and at times self-contradictory, and their agenda is different from that of the narratives; therein lies the reader's frustration. The present writer, passionate about uncovering historical fact, claims to have made some progress. But his objective is also to commend faith in Jesus as the Logos,the light and life of the universe and its rational principle. That visionary belief gave Christianity its power to expand and survive. A vision of similar scope can empower Christians today.
