Cathedral Chapter and Council

Cathedral Chapter

The Cathedral Chapter is the body that is responsible for the overall development, maintenance and operation of the Cathedral and its precinct. Its scope and responsibilities are set out in the Cathedral Canon of the Diocese of Brisbane.

The members of Chapter are the Archbishop, Dean, the six Residentiary Canons, Chancellor and eight lay members (Cathedral Wardens, one person elected by the Cathedral community, two people elected by diocesan Synod, two people appointed by Diocesan Council).

With the effective completion of building the Cathedral, Chapter is now considering options for wider precinct development.

Cathedral Council

The Cathedral Council acts as a council of advice to Chapter, to the Dean and to the Cathedral Wardens. It's operation is set out in the Cathedral Congregation Canon.

Members of the Council are the Dean, clergy or stipendiary lay ministers licensed by the Archbishop for duties in the Cathedral, the Cathedral Wardens, the representatives of the Cathedral in Synod, the lay person elected to be a member of the Chapter, ten members of the Cathedral community elected at the Annual Meeting and up to five people appointed by the Dean. To be eligible for election or appointment people must be registered on the Cathedral Roll.

The Council is a vital part of the ministry team, helping to bring the ministry of the Cathedral to the people of the city and beyond. We therefore seek Councillors who are self-motivated and proactive, and who will help gather the diverse groups within the Cathedral congregation and bring them together in service.

2012 key outcomes we want to achieve are:

  • Build congregation by looking to those with past links (alumni strategy)
  • Provide appropriate ministry to those on the 9+ age bracket (up to youth)
  • Develop stewardship as a way of life
  • Provide a forum for regular conversation on liturgy and theology (salon style)
  • Develop belonging and sense of community (associated with Improve communication between and within congregations and pastoral care)
