Servers Guild
The earliest recorded mention of St John's Cathedral Servers Guild is an article in the Cathedral Notes of June 1916 reporting the Admission of Servers service on Wednesday 24 May.
Today's Guild comprises an enthusiastic group of 18 men and women who provide assistance with the conduct of Sunday services at the Cathedral as well as at many other services during the year - Carol services, Holy Week and Easter services, ordination services, Synod services and so on.
Servers undertaking particular tasks may be known as Acolytes or Taperers (carry candles), Crucifers (carry crosses), Masters of Ceremonies (supervisory tasks), Thurifers (assist with incense). At the Eucharist, Servers assist with the preparation of the Altar and with the Offertory. They carry out the lavabo and the ablutions. At other services they assist with the liturgy in various ways.
A Prayer for Servers
Most gracious God and loving Father,
cleanse our hearts with the grace of your Holy Spirit,
that we may worthily serve around your Altar
and love you with an everlasting love,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
