ARRANGING YOUR WEDDING

St John's Cathedral (even as yet unfinished) is one of the most significant buildings in Australia and is a marvelous setting for a wedding. It is not, however, available for hire in the way that one may hire a venue for a wedding reception. Weddings may take place after approval has been given by the Dean.

Details of music and other arrangements are to be determined in consultation with the clergy. The celebrant of the marriage is usually a clergy staff member of the Cathedral.

DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED BY THE CHURCH OR THE STATE

Original Full Birth Certificates are required from both bride and groom. An extract is not acceptable. To obtain copies may involve considerable delay and incur fees. It is important that this matter is in hand as soon as possible!

Baptismal Certificates indicating that at least one party has been baptised into the Christian faith must be produced. Failing this, an indication of the place and date of Baptism, so that appropriate enquiries may be made.

The Notice of Intended Marriage must be with the celebrant at least one calendar month before the date of the wedding. This document is completed between 18 months and one month one day of the wedding and must be signed in the presence of an authorized witness to your signature.

Under Eighteen years of age a consent form is required. Marriage of a person under 18 without the order of a Judge or Magistrate is invalid If Consent Forms are signed by only one person, in the case of widowed parent, evidence of this circumstance must be produced. Permission cannot be given when both parties are under marriageable age.

Marriage of a widow or widower , the appropriate Death Certificate (not merely an extract) must be produced.

Remarriage of Divorced Persons is allowed in certain restricted situations. A Certificate of Divorce must be produced. An application must then be made through the Canon Pastor to the Archbishop who makes the final determination.

MARRIAGE SERVICES

The Cathedral is first and foremost a place of worship and there are times when the Cathedral is not available for a marriage service, these include Synod weekend, Holy Week which includes Easter Eve and Easter Day, and on Sundays. Saturday is the most popular day for weddings and the times available are 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm.

CONFETTI etc

The throwing of confetti or rice is contrary to the litter laws and is forbidden. A surcharge is payable if this occurs in the precinct. Flower petals, bubbles or butterflies are allowed in the grounds only. Please advise your guests.

PUNCTUALITY

It is critical to allow sufficient time to be able to enter the cathedral at the appointed time. The Priest and Cathedral Staff usually have other obligations to attend, or there could be another Wedding following yours.
Your service may be abbreviated if a bride is late.

ORDERS OF SERVICE

Special memento booklets containing the text of the service will be issued to worshippers. Parties wishing to produce their own version must obtain the details of and acknowledge appropriate copyright. It is generally easier for the printing to be done through the Cathedral Office. A charge to cover the cost of up to 100 copies is included in the base fees.

NUPTIAL EUCHARIST

Where both parties are communicant members of the Anglican church, the service may be arranged to include the reception of the Holy Communion by the Bridal couple. This should be discussed with the Celebrant. A service including provision for Holy Communion runs approximately forty minutes.

BELLS

The pealing of bells brings an added charm to a wedding and arrangements can be made with the bell ringers to ring after weddings. The bells are rung from the moment when the wedding party emerges from the cathedral at the end of the service.

At least two months’ notice is required for requests involving the bell ringers or choir.

VISITING OFFICIANTS

When couples desire an Officiant other than a member of the Cathedral staff, permission should, in the first instance, be sought from the Dean. Then the couple should ascertain whether the Priest is able and willing to officiate and ask that they contact the Dean concerning detailed arrangements for the service and rehearsal, etc.

VERGER

The Verger is in charge of the sound system. They also give guidance to family and friends who wish to act as ushers. Events arranged for times when a Verger is not on duty, will incur an additional fee. This applies particularly on Fridays after 4:00 pm and on Public Holidays.

MUSIC

The sacred nature of the marriage ceremony is reflected in the music of the service. Great care is taken to ensure that our music is worthy of the worship of almighty God. The standard selection of music is the prerogative of the Director and is listed in the Music for Weddings brochure.
Soloists are chosen by the Director of Music from the Cathedral Choir.

At least two months’ notice is required for requests involving the choir. They are not always available because of school or Cathedral commitments.

Requests regarding visiting instrumental groups and repertoire should be made via email to rjeffcoat@anglicanbrisbane.org.au.

PHOTOGRAPHS

You may choose any person as your official photographer for the day.
Only the official photographer may take photos during the service.
Flashlights and portable floodlights may not be used.
We recommend: Chris Hall – Chris Hall Photography Ph 07 3252 7000

Video filming (without floodlighting) is permitted by arrangement with the Dean, provided appropriate copyright permission is obtained.
