April 22 – The Wisdom of the Eucalyptus
“And this world, with its cravings, is passing away; but anyone who does the will of God will not pass away.” (1 John 2:17)
In our Australian landscape, the eucalyptus tree stands tall and resilient. Throughout the year, its bark sheds in long strips, revealing fresh, smooth bark beneath. This process of renewal allows the tree to rid itself of pests and parasites, ensuring its continued growth and survival. The eucalyptus tree’s cycle of shedding and regeneration serves as a powerful metaphor for our own spiritual journey. St. Francis understood the importance of letting go of attachments to the material world, shedding the old to make way for new growth in the spirit. Jesus taught us to release our grip on temporary pleasures and instead focus on the eternal by seeking first the kingdom of God. As we learn to let go of our worldly cravings and align our lives with the will of God, we, too, can experience the renewal and growth that the eucalyptus tree so beautifully embodies.
Reflection:
What are the old habits, attitudes, or attachments that I need to shed to make room for spiritual growth?
How can I prioritise seeking the will of God in my daily life, even as the world around me is constantly changing?
Prayer:
Loving God, grant me the wisdom to release my grip on the impermanent and to trust in your eternal love. May I, like the eucalyptus tree, continually shed what no longer serves me and grow in harmony with your will.
