Exploring the Intersection of A.I and Ministry

The Cathedral Resource Church Initiative is exploring the dual impact of A.I on faith communities, examining both its potential to enhance community engagement and accessibility, as well as the ethical concerns and challenges it presents.

Historically, each technological innovation, from the printing press to digital media, has sparked societal fears about its potential negative impacts. Socrates warned against writing for causing forgetfulness, while in the 16th-century Conrad Gessner expressed concerns over information overload due to the printing press. Similar apprehensions arose with the advent of radio, television, and the internet, focusing on issues like diminished academic performance and impaired attention spans. However, research often contradicts these fears, suggesting that technology’s effects are not universally harmful.

The speed at which A.I is developing does pose significant concerns. This speed is not being matched with regulatory boundaries or significant discussion of its impacts. By becoming familiar with the technology, the Cathedral poses to become a voice for these concerns.

Technological advancements have had a profound positive impact on faith communities, enhancing communication, worship, education, and administration. The printing press revolutionised the dissemination of religious texts, while the internet and social media have connected believers worldwide. Digital tools such as prayer apps, online devotionals, live service broadcasts, and church management software have aided spiritual practices and organisational tasks. Additionally, technology increases accessibility for marginalised groups. These innovations ensure that faith communities can adapt and thrive, maintaining their core values in a modern context.

In this light the Cathedral Resource Church is investigating both the potential uses and concerns with A.I. Angie Mooney (Cathedral Resource Church Reference Group Coordinator) is exploring this area. We encourage you to contact Angie if your interested in discussing your concerns on this topic or if your interested in investigating how emerging technology may be useful to your parish. If you are currently using A.I tools we would love to hear your experiences.
