May 12 – Transformed by Grace
A woman who had a low reputation in that town came to the house. She had learned that Jesus was dining with the Pharisee, so she brought with her an alabaster jar of perfumed oil. She stood behind Jesus, crying, and her tears fell on his feet. Then she dried his feet with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the oil. (Luke 7:37-38)
In the garden, the humble dandelion is often overlooked, a weed despised by many but cherished by children for its golden blossoms and delicate seed heads. This resilient plant, though frequently uprooted, possesses a hidden beauty and a tenacious spirit. In the same way, the woman in the Gospel story, despite her low social standing, approaches Jesus with a bold act of love and devotion. Her tears and the precious oil she pours on his feet are a poignant reminder of the transformative power of grace.
Franciscan spirituality invites the embrace of the “dandelions” in the midst – those who are dismissed or marginalised by society. By extending compassion and understanding to the outcast and the vulnerable, we participate in a transformative process of divine love, which heals brokenness and brings wholeness. As hearts open to the hidden beauty in each person, space is created for the kingdom of God to flourish, a realm where all are welcomed and cherished as beloved children of the Divine.
Reflection:
1. How can I cultivate a spirit of compassion and understanding towards those who are often judged or rejected by others?
2. In what ways can I offer my own acts of love and devotion, using my talents and resources to bring healing and hope to those in need?
Prayer
Gracious God, grant me the eyes to see the hidden beauty in every person, especially those who are overlooked or dismissed. Give me the courage to extend Your love and compassion to all.
