July 1 – Builders of the Sacred

We are coworkers with God; you are God’s farm, God’s building. (1 Corinthians 3:9)

In the vast Australian outback, termite mounds rise like ancient cathedrals, testaments to the power of collective effort and divine design. These intricate structures, born from the simple actions of countless tiny insects, mirror our own role as co-creators with the Divine. Just as each termite contributes to the greater whole, we too are called to be stewards of God’s creation, building and nurturing the sacred in our world.

Franciscan spirituality teaches us to see the interconnectedness of all creation, recognising that every creature plays a vital role in the cosmic dance of life. Like the termites, whose individual actions give rise to complex, self-sustaining ecosystems, we are invited to work in harmony with God and one another. As God’s “building,” we are not passive structures but living, breathing collaborators in the ongoing work of creation, each of us contributing our unique gifts to the greater whole.

Reflection:

1. How am I actively participating as a co-creator with God in my daily life?

2. In what ways can I better align my actions with the interconnected nature of creation, contributing to the greater good?

Prayer:

Divine Architect, guide my hands and heart as I work alongside You in tending to Your creation. May my actions, however small, contribute to the building of Your kingdom on earth.
