July 2 – Sacred Stewardship: Living Worship
Sisters and brothers, I beg you through the mercy of God to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. (Romans 12:1)
In the warm, shallow waters of our coast, dugongs graze peacefully on seagrass meadows, their gentle movements a living testament to the interconnectedness of all creation. These marine mammals, often called “sea cows,” maintain the delicate balance of their ecosystem through their feeding habits, ensuring the health and sustainability of their underwater world. Their very existence becomes a form of worship, a living sacrifice that nurtures and sustains the community of life around them.
This beautiful dance of stewardship echoes the call to offer our bodies as living sacrifices. Just as the dugong’s actions ripple through its ecosystem, our daily choices and actions can become a spiritual act of worship, nurturing the world around us. By embracing our role as caretakers of creation, we participate in the divine flow of life, recognising that true spirituality is not separate from the physical world but intimately intertwined with it. In this way, our lives become a living prayer, a constant act of reverence for the miracle of existence and the intricate web of relationships that sustain all life.
Reflection:
1. How can I view my daily actions and choices as acts of worship and stewardship for the world around me?
2. In what ways might I be called to be a “living sacrifice” for the health and sustainability of my community and environment?
Prayer:
Divine Creator, help me to see the sacredness in my everyday actions and guide me to be a living sacrifice, nurturing and sustaining the world around me as an act of worship and love.
