July 3 – Tending the Mounds of Justice

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice: they will have their fill. (Matthew 5:6)

In the arid Australian outback, the Malleefowl engages in a remarkable ritual of persistence and care. These dedicated birds construct and maintain large mounds of sand and organic matter, serving as natural incubators for their eggs. Day after day, they adjust these mounds, adding or removing material to maintain the perfect temperature for their developing offspring. This constant cycle of attentiveness mirrors the ongoing work required for justice in our world.

Like the Malleefowl’s mound, justice requires daily tending. It is not a static event but a living, breathing reality that demands our constant care and adjustment. This echoes the spiritual call to be co-creators with the Divine, participating in the ongoing work of creation and redemption. As we hunger and thirst for justice, we are invited to engage in this sacred cycle of care, knowing that our persistent efforts, however small they may seem, contribute to the larger tapestry of God’s justice unfolding in the world.

Reflection:

1. How am I being called to tend to the “mounds of justice” in my own life and community today?

2. In what ways can I cultivate a spirit of persistence and care in my pursuit of justice, even when the results are not immediately visible?

Prayer:

Divine Creator, grant me the wisdom to recognise the daily opportunities to nurture justice, and the strength to persist in this sacred work. May my hunger and thirst for righteousness be a catalyst for positive change in the world.
