July 18 – Serving in Harmony
‘You know how among the Gentiles those who exercise authority are domineering and arrogant; those ‘great ones’ know how to make their own importance felt. But it can’t be like that with you. Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all.’ (Mark 10:42-44)
In the lush canopies of Australia’s forests, a remarkable society thrives – the colony of weaver ants. These tiny creatures embody the essence of service and mutual support, each member fulfilling a specific role for the collective good. Their intricate network of cooperation mirrors the divine dance of interconnectedness, where true greatness lies not in domination, but in harmonious service. This natural wisdom resonates deeply with the spiritual call to humility and selfless love. Just as the weaver ants work tirelessly to maintain their shared home, we are invited to cultivate a heart of service, recognising that our individual gifts are meant to uplift the whole. In this sacred ecology of relationships, we find that leadership is not about exercising power over others, but about empowering all to flourish in their unique roles.
Reflection:
1. How can I shift my perspective to see leadership as an opportunity to serve rather than to dominate?
2. In what ways am I being called to use my gifts in service to my community, mirroring the collaborative spirit of the weaver ants?
Prayer:
Divine Creator, help me to embrace the wisdom of service and humility. May I find joy in supporting others and contributing to the greater good, just as each creature plays its part in the magnificent tapestry of Your creation.
