July 29 – Resting by Living Waters

YHWH, you are my shepherd— I want nothing more. You let me lie down in green meadows; you lead me beside restful waters: you refresh my soul. (Psalm 23:1-3)

The Murray River, Australia’s longest waterway, winds through diverse landscapes, offering rest and rejuvenation to countless creatures and weary travellers. Like a shepherd guiding their flock, the river leads to places of respite, its banks a haven for kangaroos, koalas, and myriad bird species. This natural oasis reflects the divine care described in the psalm, where the Creator tenderly guides us to restorative spaces.

The Murray’s rhythmic flow, its cycles of flood and drought, mirror life’s ebbs and flows. By observing nature’s patterns, we learn to embrace both activity and rest as essential parts of our spiritual journey. The river’s constancy amid change reminds us of the enduring presence of the Divine, always ready to refresh our souls when we pause to drink from its living waters.

Reflection:
1. When was the last time I allowed myself to truly rest beside “still waters,” and how did it affect my spiritual well-being?
2. How can I create moments of restful contemplation in my daily life, drawing inspiration from the natural world around me?

Prayer:
Divine Shepherd, guide me to the restful waters of your presence. Help me to find rejuvenation in the beauty of your creation and to trust in your constant care.
