August 5 – The Sacred Spiral
Notice how the flowers grow. They neither labor nor weave, yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendour was robed like one of these! (Matthew 6:28)
The intricate spiral pattern of the paper daisy’s florets is a captivating display of the divine design woven into the fabric of creation. This delicate wildflower, seemingly simple and unassuming, holds within its form a profound lesson on the inherent order and symmetry that underlies all of nature. Just as the daisy effortlessly unfolds its petals in a perfect spiral, we too are called to trust in the unfolding of our lives, knowing that the same loving presence that guides the growth of the flowers also guides our own journey.
In the spirit of simplicity and humility embodied by St. Francis, we are invited to see ourselves as part of the greater web of life, interconnected with all of creation. By contemplating the paper daisy’s sacred geometry, we come to recognise the divine fingerprint in every aspect of the natural world, from the smallest blade of grass to the grandest mountain peak. This recognition fills us with a deep sense of reverence and kinship with all that exists, inspiring us to tread gently upon the earth and to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.
Reflection:
1. As I contemplate the spiral pattern of the paper daisy, what does it reveal to me about the presence of the divine in the world around me?
2. How can I cultivate a sense of simplicity and trust in my own life, allowing my unique journey to unfold with the same grace and ease as the daisy’s petals?
Prayer:
Creator of all, may I see Your sacred design in every flower, every creature, and every moment of my life. Guide me to walk the path of simplicity and trust, knowing that I am forever held in Your loving embrace.
