September 10 – Sustainable Harmony

That’s why I tell you, don’t worry about your livelihood, what you are to eat. Don’t worry about your body and what you are to wear. For life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. (Luke 12:22-23)

The Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, an ancient aquaculture system created by the Gunditjmara people, exemplifies living in harmony with nature. This intricate network of stone channels, traps, and pools reflects a deep understanding of the complex relationships within the ecosystem. The Gunditjmara managed resources sustainably, respecting the natural flows of their environment.

This ancient wisdom aligns with Jesus’ teachings that life is more than our personal needs and desires. Like the Gunditjmara, who considered future generations’ well-being, we are called to see the bigger picture. Our lives are interconnected with the land, its creatures, and each other. Focusing only on our needs creates imbalance, but recognising our place in the greater web of life fosters unity and purpose. Learning from the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, we can deepen our appreciation for life’s sacredness and our responsibility to nurture it with compassion and respect.

Reflection:
1. How can I look beyond my immediate needs and consider the well-being of others and future generations in my daily actions?
2. In what ways can I deepen my connection to the natural world and learn from the wisdom of those who have lived in harmony with it for centuries?

Prayer:
Divine Creator, help me to trust in the abundance of life and to let go of my worries. Guide me to live in harmony with all of creation, recognising the sacredness in every moment.
