September 26 – The Great Sandy Desert
Therefore, humble yourselves before God’s mighty power, that you may be exalted by God on the appointed day. (1 Peter 5:6)
The Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia embodies humility amid adversity. This vast, arid expanse quietly withstands the harsh sun and scarce rainfall. Yet beneath its seemingly barren surface, the desert harbours hidden reserves of water, patiently waiting for the opportune moment to nourish the seeds of life that lie dormant in the sand. When the rains finally come, the desert bursts forth with a spectacular display of resilient wildflowers, each one a tiny miracle of survival and adaptability.
Similarly, the spiritual journey often calls us to embrace humility in life’s challenges. By surrendering our ego and trusting in the Divine’s wisdom, we access the hidden reserves of strength and grace within us. Like the desert enduring its dry seasons, trusting that rains will come, we, too, must learn to wait upon the Divine with faith and trust.
Reflection:
1. In what areas of my life am I being called to practice humility and surrender?
2. How can I cultivate a deeper trust in the wisdom and timing of the Divine, even in the midst of life’s challenges?
Prayer:
Divine Presence, grant me the grace to embrace humility and surrender in the face of life’s adversities. Help me to trust in your hidden reserves of strength and wisdom.
