September 30 – Loving All Creatures
But a Samaritan, who was taking the same road, also came upon the traveler and, filled with compassion, approached the traveler and dressed the wounds, pouring on oil and wine. (Luke 10:33)
Wildlife rescuers demonstrate the essence of the Good Samaritan story by caring for injured and orphaned kangaroos and wallabies. These compassionate individuals recognise the inherent worth of all creatures, transcending the boundaries of species to offer aid and comfort to those in need. Their actions embody the spiritual principle of interconnectedness, reminding us that we are all part of the intricate web of life, each playing a vital role in the greater ecosystem.
Just as the Samaritan in the parable tended to the wounds of the traveler, wildlife rescuers pour their time, energy, and resources into rehabilitating animals. They dress the wounds of the injured, provide nourishment to the weak, and offer a safe haven for the orphaned to grow and thrive. In doing so, they exemplify the transformative power of love and compassion, which knows no boundaries and has the capacity to heal and restore even the most vulnerable.
Reflection:
- How can I expand my circle of compassion to include all living beings, recognising our shared connection and the sacredness of all life?
- In what ways can I be a Good Samaritan to those who are different from me, offering aid and support without judgment or discrimination?
Prayer:
Divine Source of All, open my heart to see the interconnectedness of all life and fill me with the compassion to care for all beings. May I be an instrument of love and healing in this world.
