November 14 – Communal Wetlands

People who don’t provide for their relatives, especially those in the immediate household, have denied the faith and are worse than unbelievers. (1 Timothy 5:8)

The coastal wetlands are a marvel of interconnectedness and mutual support. These intricate ecosystems filter water, protect coastlines from erosion, and provide a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Each element plays a vital role in maintaining the health and balance of the whole. In much the same way, our faith calls us to tend to the well-being of our communities, especially those closest to us.

Just as the wetlands require the contribution of each component to thrive, our communities need the active participation and care of all members. When we fail to provide for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those around us, we deny the essence of our faith—the call to love and serve one another. By participating in the healthy functioning of our own communal ‘wetlands’, we create a resilient and vibrant community that can weather the storms of life.

Reflection:

  1. How can I actively contribute to the well-being of my community today?

  2. What can I learn from the interconnectedness of coastal wetlands about the importance of mutual support in my faith journey?

Prayer:

Divine Creator, help me to recognise and honour the sacred interconnectedness of all life. Guide me in tending to the needs of my community, so that together we may grow in love, faith, and resilience.
