November 2 – The Present Moment

Enough of worrying about tomorrow! Let tomorrow take care of itself. Today has troubles enough of its own. (Matthew 6:34)

As the Australian Pelican glides effortlessly over coastal waters, its keen eyes are fixed on the present moment, scanning for its next meal. With a sudden dive, it plunges into the water, emerging triumphantly with a fish in its beak. The pelican’s focus is entirely on the here and now, unburdened by worries of future sustenance. In this simple act, the pelican embodies a profound spiritual truth: the grace and sufficiency found in the present moment.

Just as the pelican trusts in the abundance of the sea to provide for its needs, we too can learn to trust in the loving providence of the Divine. When we relinquish our anxieties about the future and instead focus on attending to the present, we open ourselves to the grace that is always available to us. By embracing the present moment with faith and surrender, we allow ourselves to be nourished by the love and wisdom that permeates all of creation.

Reflection:

  1. How can I cultivate a deeper trust in the Divine’s loving presence in my life, even amidst uncertainty?
  2. What practices can I engage in to help me stay grounded in the present moment, releasing my worries about the future?

Prayer:

Divine Presence, help me to embrace the grace and sufficiency of the present moment. May I trust in Your loving care and find peace in the midst of life’s uncertainties.
