November 22 – Scribbly Gum

We all go to the same place. All forms of life are from dust, and return to dust. (Ecclesiastes 3:20)

The Scribbly Gum moth leaves behind intricate patterns etched into the bark of Eucalyptus trees. These distinctive scribbles serve as a poignant reminder of the transient nature of individual life and the enduring cycle of existence. Just as the moth larvae burrow their unique paths before emerging as adults and eventually returning to the earth, so too do our own lives leave behind a singular mark on the world before we return to the dust from which we came.

The Scribbly Gum moth’s journey mirrors the spiritual principle of interconnectedness. Each life, no matter how brief or seemingly insignificant, is interwoven with countless others in the grand tapestry of creation. The scribbles left behind by the moth larvae are not merely a record of an individual’s existence, but a testament to the intricate relationships that bind all living things together. In recognising the beauty and impermanence of these marks, we are reminded to embrace the sacred in every moment and to trust in the cyclical nature of life, death, and transformation.

Reflection:

  1. How can I find meaning and purpose in my own journey, knowing that my time on Earth is fleeting?

  2. In what ways can I cultivate a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all life and the sacredness of each moment?

Prayer:

Divine Source, may I find comfort in the knowledge that my life is a part of an enduring cycle, and may I learn to embrace the beauty and impermanence of my own unique journey. Help me to recognise the sacred in every moment and to trust in the transformative power of life, death, and rebirth.
