November 28 – Depths of Spirit

The wind blows where it will. You hear the sound it makes, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. (John 3:8)
The Eta Carinae nebula is a bright and chaotic cloud of gas and dust in the Milky Way galaxy. Its beauty and power remind us of the deep mysteries that exist in both the universe and in our spiritual lives. Just as the nebula’s complex patterns and processes are hard to fully understand, so too is the movement of the Spirit in the lives of those who are spiritually reborn.
The passage from the Gospel of John compares the workings of the Spirit to the unpredictable yet unmistakable presence of the wind. It suggests that the transformative power of spiritual rebirth, while undeniable, remains largely beyond human understanding or control. Like the wind, the Spirit moves freely and mysteriously, touching and transforming lives in ways that often elude our grasp. This realisation invites us to embrace the unknown and to trust in the wisdom of the divine, even when we cannot fully comprehend its ways.
Reflection:
-
In what areas of my life do I struggle to relinquish control and trust in the mysterious workings of the Spirit?
-
How can I cultivate a greater openness to the transformative power of spiritual rebirth, even when its movements are difficult to discern?
Prayer:
Divine Presence, grant me the humility to accept the limitations of my understanding and the courage to surrender to the unfathomable depths of your Spirit. May I trust in your transformative power, even when its workings remain hidden from my sight.
