January 29 – Serving the Needs of All
Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all. (Mark 10:43-44)
In the intricate web of life within our waterways, the yabby plays a vital role. This small freshwater crustacean tirelessly feeds on detritus and organic matter that settles on the bottom of streams and rivers. Through recycling the nutrients, the Yabby helps to maintain the delicate balance and health of these aquatic ecosystems. In this way the yabbies actions contribute to the greater good.
Similarly, the path to true greatness in the eyes of the Divine lies not in seeking prestige or power, but in humble service to others. Just as the yabby’s small but essential role supports the thriving of the entire river system, our acts of selfless love and service, no matter how small, contribute to the healing and flourishing of all creation. When we shift our focus from self-aggrandisement to meeting the needs of those around us, we align ourselves with the heart of the Sacred.
Reflection:
- How can I embrace humility and let go of my desire for recognition or status?
- What small acts of service can I offer today to contribute to the well-being of my community and the world around me?
Prayer:
Divine Source of all life, guide me in the path of humble service. Allow me to recognise how my skills can help meet the needs of others, knowing that in doing so, I am participating in the sacred work of nurturing all of creation.
