January 16 – Enduring Flow of Life

All rivers empty into the sea, but the sea never fills up; again and again the rivers go where they’ve always gone. (Ecclesiastes 1:7)

The tidal currents of the Torres Strait, have shaped the islands and the lives of the people who inhabit them for millennia. These powerful currents, driven by the moon’s gravitational pull, sculpt the landscape and dictate the rhythms of the marine ecosystem. Just as the rivers mentioned in Ecclesiastes continuously flow into the sea without filling it, the tidal currents of the Torres Strait persist, unperturbed by the passing of time or the changes in human activity.

Tidal currents serve as a reminder of the eternal nature of the Divine. While human constructs are fleeting, the underlying essence of life remains constant. The tidal currents, like the love and wisdom of the Creator, are a steadfast presence amidst the ever-changing world. By attuning to these timeless rhythms, one can find solace and perspective, recognising that the challenges and triumphs of our individual lives are but small ripples in the vast ocean of existence.

Reflection:

  1. How can I find stability and peace in the midst of life’s constant changes by connecting with the enduring aspects of nature and the Divine?

  2. What can the tidal currents teach me about surrendering to the natural flow of life and trusting in the greater wisdom at work in the universe?

Prayer:

Divine Presence, help me to find comfort and guidance in the eternal rhythms of life. May I learn to navigate the currents of change with grace, knowing that Your love is the constant that sustains me.
