February 9 – Reconciliation

If you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your sister or brother has a grudge against you, leave your gift there at the altar. Go to be reconciled to them, and then come and offer your gift. (Matthew 5:23-24)
The Tasmanian blue gum, a majestic eucalyptus tree, holds within its being a profound lesson about the power of reconciliation. After the devastation of a bushfire, when all seems lost and the landscape is left charred and barren, the blue gum demonstrates a remarkable ability to regenerate. From the base of the tree, new shoots emerge, a testament to the resilience and determination of life to persevere and grow anew.
In the same way, our relationships, when faced with the fires of conflict and misunderstanding, have the potential to regenerate and grow stronger through the act of reconciliation. The Gospel of Matthew reminds us that before we offer our gifts to the Divine, we must first seek to mend any broken relationships. By prioritising reconciliation, we create the space for new growth, understanding, and a deeper connection with others and with the sacred.
Reflection:
- What relationships in my life are in need of reconciliation and healing?
- How can I cultivate the resilience to seek reconciliation, even in the face of challenges and setbacks?
Prayer:
May I have the courage to prioritise reconciliation in my relationships, knowing that through this act of love and understanding, new growth and deeper connections can emerge.
