March 15

The kindom of heaven is like the mustard seed which a farmer sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is the biggest shrub of all—it becomes a tree so that the birds of the air come to perch in its branches. (Matthew 13:31-32)

(The Inclusive Bible translation uses ‘kindom’ to reflect our kinship with all of creation.)

In the outback, the tiny seed of the Coolibah tree embarks on a remarkable journey of transformation. Though seemingly insignificant, this seed holds the potential for greatness. Rooted in a harsh landscape, the Coolibah sapling emerges, determined to thrive. Through drought, heat, and flood, it perseveres, steadily growing into a majestic tree—a testament to resilience and the potential for growth in the face of adversity.

Like the Coolibah tree, we too possess the potential for transformation and greatness. Just as the mustard seed in the parable grows into a tree providing shelter and sustenance, we are called to cultivate the Divine potential within us. By nurturing the seeds of faith, compassion, and wisdom within our hearts, we too can become like the mighty Coolibah, offering shade, shelter, and nourishment to all who seek refuge in our presence.

Reflection:

  1. What seeds of potential lie dormant within me, waiting to be nurtured and brought to fruition?

  2. How can I cultivate resilience and adaptability in the face of life’s challenges, just as the Coolibah tree thrives in the harsh Australian outback?

Prayer:

Divine Presence, help me to recognise and nurture the seeds of potential within me, that I may grow in faith, wisdom, and compassion, and become a source of shelter and nourishment for others.
