You must not sell land in perpetuity, for the land belongs to me, and you are only foreigners and tenants. (Leviticus 25:23)

In the ancient landscape of the Pilbara, stromatolites stand as fossilised testaments to the earliest forms of life on Earth. These layered structures, were formed by the patient work of cyanobacteria that occurred over 3 billion years ago. They offer a humbling perspective on the relatively recent arrival of the human species.

The passage reminds us that the land is not ours to possess, but rather a sacred trust bestowed upon us by the Divine. We are called to be responsible stewards, caring for and nurturing the Earth during our brief sojourn. The stromatolites, in their ancient wisdom, teach us to embrace the impermanence of our lives while recognising our interconnectedness with all of creation through time. By living with mindfulness, compassion, and reverence for the land, we honour the timeless truth that we are all part of a greater, eternal story.

Reflection:

  1. How can I cultivate a deeper appreciation for the vastness of time and the sacred nature of the land?

  2. In what ways can I be a more responsible steward of the Earth, honouring the Divine’s trust in me?

Prayer:

Eternal Creator, may the ancient wisdom of the stromatolites remind me of my place in the grand tapestry of life. Guide me to live with humility, reverence, and purpose, knowing that the land is a sacred gift entrusted to my care.
