Sacred Solitude
But when you pray, go to your room, shut the door, and pray to God who is in that secret place, and your Abba God—who sees all that is done in secret—will reward you. (Matthew 6:6)
The Boobook Owl, a nocturnal creature native to Australia and New Guinea, spends its days roosting in the hollows of trees. In the quiet seclusion of these natural sanctuaries, the owl finds respite from the busyness of the world outside. This behaviour serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of creating sacred spaces in our own lives—places where we can retreat from the noise and distractions of daily life to connect with the Divine Presence that dwells within us.
Just as the Boobook Owl seeks out the tranquility of its tree hollow, we too are called to carve out moments of solitude and silence in our lives. In these sacred spaces, whether it be a physical room or a quiet corner of our hearts, we can shut the door on the chaos of the world and open ourselves up to the still, small voice of God. It is in these moments of deep communion with the Divine that we find the strength, wisdom, and grace to navigate the complexities of life with greater clarity and purpose.
Reflection:
-
Where is my sacred space, and how can I prioritise spending time there each day to deepen my connection with God?
-
What distractions or obstacles prevent me from fully embracing moments of solitude and silence, and how can I gently release them?
Prayer:
Divine Presence, guide me to the sacred spaces within and around me, where I can find stillness and solace in Your loving embrace. Help me to cultivate a heart that yearns for deep communion with You.
