Eternal Investments
Don’t store up earthly treasures for yourselves, which moths and rust destroy and thieves can break in and steal. But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor rust can destroy them and thieves cannot break in and steal them. (Matthew 6:19-20)
The industrious honeyeater, a small yet vibrant bird, embodies a spiritual truth as it goes about its daily work. Flitting from flower to flower, sipping nectar and inadvertently pollinating blossoms, this tiny creature plays a vital role in maintaining the delicate balance of entire ecosystems. In its simple, instinctive actions, the honeyeater invests its energy in something far greater than itself, contributing to the flourishing of life around it.
In the same way, we are called to invest our time, talents, and resources in the eternal rather than the temporal. Just as the honeyeater’s seemingly small actions have far-reaching effects, our daily choices to love, serve, and cultivate compassion ripple out into the world, creating a treasure that cannot be stolen or destroyed. By aligning our lives with the sacred rhythms of grace and generosity, we participate in the Divine dance of transformation, nurturing the seeds of heaven on earth.
Reflection:
-
How can I shift my focus from earthly possessions to eternal investments today?
-
What small acts of love and service can I offer to contribute to the flourishing of life around me?
Prayer:
Divine Presence, guide me in storing up treasures in heaven, investing my life in love, compassion, and service. May my daily choices reflect the eternal values of Your kindom.
(The Inclusive Bible translation uses ‘kindom’ to reflect our kinship with all of creation.)
