Trusting Like an Emu Chick
The truth is, unless you change and become like little children, you will not enter the kindom of heaven. Those who make themselves as humble as this child are the greatest in the kindom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3-4)
(The Inclusive Bible translation uses ‘kindom’ to reflect our kinship with all of creation.)
In the Australian outback, emu chicks emerge from their shells with an innate trust in their father. For two years, they follow him closely, relying on his protection and guidance to navigate the complexities of their world. The chicks do not question their father’s wisdom or doubt his ability to provide for them. They simply trust, following his lead with humility and openness.
This beautiful example from nature mirrors the spiritual principle of childlike faith. As humans navigate the intricacies of life, with its many challenges and uncertainties, they are called to trust in the Divine with the same humility and openness as an emu chick. This requires a willingness to surrender control, to let go of pride and self-sufficiency, and to embrace the journey with a sense of wonder and curiosity. By embodying this childlike faith, individuals open themselves to the transformative power of the Divine, allowing themselves to be guided and nurtured along the path of spiritual growth.
Reflection:
-
How can I cultivate a more childlike faith in my own life, trusting in the Divine’s guidance and provision?
-
In what areas of my life do I struggle to let go of control and embrace humility?
Prayer:
Divine Creator, may I trust in you with the humility and openness of a child. Help me to let go of my need for control and to embrace the journey of faith with wonder and curiosity.
