April 20 – The Wisdom of the Wattle

Warn those who are blessed with this world’s goods not to look down on other people. They are not to put their hope in wealth, for it is uncertain. Instead, they are to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with all that we need for our enjoyment.” 1 Timothy 6:17

The golden wattle, Australia’s floral emblem, teaches us a profound lesson in stewardship and sustainability. This resilient tree thrives in challenging conditions, enriching the soil with nitrogen and providing shelter and sustenance for countless creatures. In times of adversity, the wattle drops its leaves to conserve precious resources, only to burst forth with an abundance of golden blooms when the time is right. Similarly, Jesus challenges us to find our security not in material wealth, but in the love and providence of God. St Francis, too, embraced a life of radical simplicity, recognising that true joy and freedom come from nurturing a right relationship with the Earth and all its creatures. By living lightly and gifting freely, we become wise stewards of the resources entrusted to us, ensuring a sustainable future for all.

Reflection:

In what ways can I live more simply and sustainably, trusting in God’s providence?

How can I use my resources to create a more just and compassionate world?

Prayer:

Loving God, grant me the wisdom of the wattle tree. May I hold lightly to material possessions and instead find my security in your boundless love. Inspire me to live as a

faithful steward, using my gifts to bring healing and hope to your beloved Creation.
