OUR PLACE IN HISTORY: THE DEANERY’S HERITAGE APPEAL

On 10th December 1859, Sir George Bowen, newly-appointed as the first Governor of Queensland, stood on the first floor balcony of Adelaide House looking out over the crowded lawn sweeping down to the Brisbane River. The excitement on that day was the reading of the proclamation creating the colony of Queensland. Adelaide House was the first Government House of Queensland, a temporary residence for the Governor until the completion of the Government House in George Street in 1862.

Today, Adelaide House is The Deanery of
St John’s Cathedral. The sweeping lawn is long gone, but the significant heritage site of the first floor balcony of Adelaide House is still there. It is, however, in need of a great deal of work to restore it to a stable and safe condition, to ensure its continued place in our history.

Our Cathedral has received a State Department of Environment and Science Heritage Action Grant of $50,000 towards the balcony restoration project, with the Cathedral required to contribute the remaining $55,000 towards the total cost of $105,000.

Preliminary work has been completed and it is now up to us to raise the funding so that the project can be completed.

The best vantage point to view the work in progress is from Hobbs Park, the public urban green space located on the fourth floor of 480 Adelaide Street (access by escalator from Adelaide Street).

The National Trust of Australia (Queensland) has listed The Deanery (Adelaide House). This means that in the Trust’s view it is essential to Australia’s heritage and must be preserved. Donations to the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) for this appeal are allowable as deductions for tax purposes.

To make your contribution towards the restoration of this significant heritage site, access the conservation appeal on the National Trust website at: www.nationaltrust.org.au/services/heritage-conservation-appeals-qld/
