April 23 – Awakening to New Life

“Indeed, I consider the sufferings of the present to be nothing compared with the glory that will be revealed in us. All creation eagerly awaits the revelation of the children of God.” (Romans 8:18-19)

In bushland, the cyclical process of bushfires and regeneration reminds us of the power of transformation. The banksia is a prime example, as it relies on bushfires to open its seed pods and begin anew. Similarly, Franciscan spirituality encourages us to embrace the cycles of life, trusting that every ending marks a new beginning. This trust allows us to find hope in the midst of suffering, just as the natural world finds new life in the ashes.

The interconnectedness of all creation, as expressed in Romans 8:18-19, invites us to see ourselves as part of the larger web of life. By embracing the cycles of impermanence, we can awaken to the glory that is being revealed in us and in the world around us.

Reflection:

What areas of my life are experiencing “bushfires” of transformation, and how can I trust in the promise of new life?

How can I cultivate a sense of hope and trust in the midst of suffering, knowing that all creation is awaiting the revelation of God’s glory?

Prayer:

Creator, help me to embrace the cycles of life and death, and to trust in the promise of new life. May I find hope in the midst of suffering, and may I awaken to the glory that is being revealed in me and in the world around me.
