May 21 – Solitude and Silence

After dismissing the crowds, Jesus went up into the hills by himself to pray. (Matthew 14:23)

In the vast expanses of the Australian Outback, the red kangaroo finds moments of solitude amidst the rugged landscape. This majestic creature, known for its social nature within its mob, also seeks out quiet spaces to rest and rejuvenate. In the stillness of the early morning or the hush of the evening, the kangaroo pauses, attuning itself to the rhythms of the land and the whispers of the wind.

Franciscan spirituality recognises the value of solitude and silence in our spiritual journey. Like Jesus, who sought out quiet hills for prayer, we are invited to create space for contemplation and presence. In the midst of life’s busyness and noise, these moments of solitude allow us to reconnect with our inner selves and with the Divine. As we step away from the crowds and distractions, we open ourselves to the gentle guidance of the Spirit, finding clarity, renewal, and strength for the journey ahead.

Reflection:

1. How can I create intentional space for solitude and silence in my life, even amidst the demands of daily responsibilities?

2. What insights or guidance might I receive as I pause in the presence of the Divine, attuning myself to the still, small voice within?

Prayer:

God of stillness and silence, guide me to sacred spaces of solitude, where I can rest in your presence and find renewal for my spirit. As I embrace these moments of contemplation, grant me clarity, wisdom, and strength for the path ahead.
