May 29 – The Ebb and Flow of the Tides

Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we’ll go to such-and-such a city, spend a year there, open a business and get rich.’ You can never tell what your life will be like or what will happen tomorrow. You’re no more than a vapour that appears briefly and then disappears. (James 4:13-14)

The rhythmic ebb and flow of the tides along the coastline reminds us of the cyclical nature of life. As waves caress the shore, only to recede back into the vast ocean, we are reminded of the impermanence that permeates our existence. Franciscan spirituality embraces this truth, teaching us to find solace and wisdom in the ever-changing tides of life. Just as the tides are governed by the gravitational dance of the moon and the earth, our lives are subject to forces beyond our control, each phase bringing unique challenges and opportunities for growth.

The wisdom of Saint Francis invites us to find peace in the ebb and flow of life, recognising that our plans and aspirations are but grains of sand in the grand scheme of creation. By embracing the transient nature of our existence, we open ourselves to the beauty and wonder that surrounds us, even amidst uncertainty.

Reflection:

1. How can I cultivate a deeper acceptance of the ebb and flow of life, finding peace in the midst of change and uncertainty?

2. What lessons can I learn from the tides about embracing the impermanence of life and trusting in the divine unfolding of my journey?

Prayer:

Divine Presence, help me to find solace in the ebb and flow of life, embracing the ever-changing tides of my journey with grace and trust. May I find strength and resilience in the face of uncertainty, knowing that your love guides me through every phase of my existence.
